I completed an MA in ceramics at Cardiff School of Art & Design in 2008. My research centred around understanding and putting into play a “ceramic Language”. The work is shown here alongside the statement from my degree show below.
“Recognition begins the instant we encounter any form of representation, our cognitive memory grasps onto certain aspects and we begin to interpret what we see. This body of work is an investigation into this process of perception, how we forge mental links in order to understand.
I am interested in the metaphor of language as a structure, one that can be broken down and pieced back together in a limitless combination of parts in order to communicate. The restrictions of the ceramic process as well as the possibilities within the discipline form an interesting part of the ceramic language.
I have experimented with different devices achievable within this language in order to understand what functions as a sign. There are several lines of enquiry at work within the group of pieces, but viewed as a whole, my use of form, colour, surface and arrangement is intended to encourage connections and to lead the viewer from piece to piece, experiencing numerous possible narratives.”
